![]() ![]() The color combination with the swastika made for a powerful logo, a trademark that became indelibly linked with the Nazi Party. ![]() The color scheme for the Nazi flag intentionally drew on the colors of the flag of Imperial Germany (1871–1918), which still resonated with many Germans who rejected democracy and the Weimar Republic. After long trials I also found a definite proportion between the size of the flag and the size of the white disk, as well as the shape and thickness of the swastika.” “I myself, meanwhile, after innumerable attempts, had laid down a final form a flag with a red background, a white disk, and a black swastika in the middle. By the time the Nazis gained control of Germany, the connotations of the swastika had forever changed. As a symbol, it became associated with the idea of a racially “pure” state. After World War I, a number of far-right nationalist movements adopted the swastika. The Nazi Party was not the only party to use the swastika in Germany. This conjecture of Aryan cultural descent of the German people is likely one of the main reasons why the Nazi Party formally adopted the swastika or Hakenkreuz (Ger., hooked cross) as its symbol in 1920. However, the work of European linguists and other scholars was taken up by racist groups, for whom the swastika was a symbol of “Aryan identity” and German nationalist pride. The Appropriation of the Swastika as a Nazi Symbol It had numerous meanings, the most common being a symbol of good luck and auspiciousness. In the beginning of the twentieth century the swastika was widely used in Europe. He connected it with similar shapes found on pottery in Germany and speculated that it was a “significant religious symbol of our remote ancestors.” Other European scholars and thinkers linked the symbol to a shared Aryan culture that spanned Europe and Asia. During his extensive excavations, the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann discovered the hooked cross on the site of ancient Troy. The symbol experienced a resurgence in the nineteenth century, as a result of growing European interest in the ancient civilizations of the Near East and India. Its “Discovery” and Meanings in Modern Europe Swastikas also have an ancient history in Europe, appearing on artifacts from pre-Christian European cultures. It is a common sight on temples or houses in India or Indonesia. To this day, it is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being." The motif (a hooked cross) appears to have first been used in Eurasia, as early as 7000 years ago, perhaps representing the movement of the sun through the sky. ![]()

The first track, a 34-second old timey ditty that came to Balliet while she was cleaning her bathtub, takes a sly jab at Jack Daniel’s with the line “You can choose your drinkin’ partner, and mine ain’t from Tennessee / Yes it’s straight Kentucky bourbon for me.” Sorry, Chris Stapleton. Murder By Death’s 2010 album, Good Morning, Magpie, kicked off with a one-two punch about whiskey. In fact, fans often gift the band their own bottles of homemade moonshine. The band is now based in Kentucky, where Turla and Balliet own an Italian restaurant that boasts a robust drinks menu, and they take pride in their regional bourbon. Whiskey has long been an integral part of Murder By Death fandom, so much so that their shows sometimes seem like drinking clubs that happen to feature live music. But for those looking to finally try out this band whose name might have been misleading, here are a few places to start. It’s hard to even pull individual songs out of their albums since each track is a piece of larger, carefully arranged story told across the span of the record. And since they’ve never had a hit record or been critical darlings, it’s daunting to find an entry point in their dense catalog. But they’ve got a cult-like following that’s kept them going. In their nearly two decades together, Murder By Death has never had much breakout success and has largely flown under the radar of music press. They’re raising funds for its release on Kickstarter, where they’ve been wildly successful in launching their last two albums, due largely to their oddball rewards, which have included private performances, riding rollercoasters with backers at theme parks, and recording songs of backers’ choosings for a covers album. They recently announced that they’re nearing completion on their eighth album, The Other Shore, which, as they describe it, is a Western space opera, which is fitting for a band that’s written concept records about the Devil waging war on Mexican villages or the themes of sin in Dante’s Inferno. Led by the husband and wife team of Adam Turla on vocals/guitar and Sarah Balliet on cello, Murder By Death has amassed a substantial catalog since forming in 2000 in Bloomington, Indiana. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can actually spill coffee on the keyboard deck and not worry about it because other than a couple holes on the edges, the keyboard deck is completely sealed. Don’t take someone else’s word for it.Īnother advantage that I do no really hear people talk about is that the keyboard folio’s keyboard is actually water resistant. honestly, if you are able to, just go to the store and try it out. I feel like YouTubers shit on this particular keyboard a lot, but yeah. And because of the short travel, the keyboard folio feels so much like it. I know that at lot of people couldn’t get used to the keyboard, but I managed to and can easily get 90wpm on on the butterfly keyboard. I have the 2018 iPad Pro 11”, with the Keyboard Folio and Apple Pencil.įirstly I just wanna say that I know that many do not hold the same sentiment as me when it comes to the keyboard, because I absolutely love the keyboard on the keyboard folio and to be completely honest I did enjoy typing on the butterfly keyboard as well. I think OP’s post was quite apt, and I just wanted to add some of my thoughts as an iPad Pro 2018 user since it came out. But it would have been too much for my needs, especially as I am trying to supplement my Macs, not replace them. The MK, with the trackpad, I am sure is great. I just wanted to write this in the event there are any out here who may be on the fence about obtaining this accessory. This was ultimately the deciding factor, and I am loving this Keyboard Folio. I am not sure if the folio will tear in the next year or so, but I hope not.Īnother huge positive for me is that I can “twist”/flip the iPad to the back and have the keyboard resting on the palm of my hand as I use it to write/walk around/etc. I will concede that the outer material of the Folio could be better, but I am not complaining about it. It does only have two resting positions, but these don’t bother me and I will make them work for my needs. The shortcuts are great and very similar to the Mac, so they make navigating through the iPad very easy. The keyboard does have a different feeling/texture, but it took me under 30 minutes of typing into MS Word to get a hang of it. So I picked up the Smart Keyboard Folio yesterday and have used it for about 24 hours and I absolutely love it. These all got me thinking and help me back on purchasing by a few weeks as I sought more and more information. One review video I saw had the reviewer saying that his wife absolutely hated the sound of the folio’s keys and he couldn’t use it around her. Some of the complaints around the Keyboard Folio were that they keys had a “weird” feeling, that the material was cheap-feeling, and required a steep learning curve to type. The idea of the MK is great, but it just wasn’t for me. The Magic Keyboard isn’t an option for me because I need to switch to “tablet” mode frequently, and I am not comfortable using the iPad with no cover/magnetic on it as I walk around. I looked into many videos and read many reviews, and it seemed like people either loved or hated the Keyboard Folio. I was recently on the fence about whether or not to get a Keyboard Folio for my 2020 11” iPad Pro. Thank you for reporting spam and other rule-breaking content.
